Acquired by Avis Budget Group in 2013, Payless operates in approximately 120 rental locations across the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. With a mixture of corporate-run and franchise locations, Payless has an extensive network of rental stores, many located in major airports.
Zipcar is the world’s leading car sharing network, with nearly one million members. Operating across 25 cities and more than 300 campuses in Europe and North America, we get people from all walks of life moving: whether we’re renting a van to a new homeowner for an hour or the latest electric car to a student for the day.
Members simply book online or via our app – and then use their membership card to unlock their vehicle. (In fact, if a customer can’t find their car, they can use their phone to honk the car’s horn.)

Operating for over 25 years, Apex Car Rentals is a leading off-airport car hire company with 30 rental locations in New Zealand and Australia.

The France Cars story began in 1952 in a garage in Lille, Northern France. Raymond Jardin was tired of lending his van to his neighbors so began a great family business adventure covering the largest cities in France, while still preserving the neighborhood feel. France cars has been part of Avis Budget Group since December 2016.
Maggiore was the first independent car rental company in Italy, now operating over 140 agencies in the country, including all main airports and railway stations. It’s strong brand personality makes it different from other companies and is based on a concept of Italian identity: quality, innovation and originality. Amico Blu started in 1997 as the undisputed leader in the Italian commercial vehicle rental market. Avis is founded
Warren Avis opens the first Avis location at Willow Run Airport, Detroit, Michigan with an $85,000 investment. This is the first car rental business to be located at an airport. Soon after, facilities are opened at Miami Airport, Florida.
Avis Begins Franchise Operations
Avis opens its first international and franchise operations in Europe, Canada, and Mexico.
Budget Rent-A-Car Corporation is Formed in Los Angeles
Morris Mirkin opens the first Budget Rent-A-Car office at Wilshire and Robertson boulevards in Los Angeles, California, with a $10,000 investment. The company name is chosen to appeal to the “budget-minded” or “value-conscious” renter.
We Try Harder
The iconic Avis “We Try Harder” advertising and marketing campaign makes its debut.
Wizard® Is Introduced
Avis introduces the rent a car industry’s first real-time information management and reservation system.
Avis Leads the Way in EMEA
